A national police group is trying to make sure a man who was convicted of attempted murder against four Cincinnati police officers doesn't get out of prison.

The National Police Association issued a statement on Monday asking people to contact the Ohio Parole Board to keep Eric Shields in prison. Shields is up for parole at the end of April, and anyone can object to his release at this Hamilton County site.

Enquirer archives report that Shields, who lived in Cumminsville, was charged with four counts of attempted murder.

In June 1993 Shields shot at two police officers in Westwood, and days later he did the same in College Hill. In College Hill, both officers were hit.

In the latter incident, archives said two officers responded to a report of a man sitting in a car with a gun was received. Police Officers Joyce Neville and Emmett Gladden approached the car where Shields was inside with a gun concealed in a newspaper.

Gladden grabbed Shields, and Shields began firing, the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office said. He hit Neville in the hand and Gladden in the shoulder. Shields fled on foot and was later apprehended.

Reports say Gladden's protective vest prevented serious injury.

"Attacks on police officers are an attack on all of us. Eric Shields should serve his maximum sentence," the National Police Association said in a statement.

Both Gladden and Neville have received Personal Sacrifice Awards from the Cincinnati Police Department.

Do you guys think he should be eligible for parole, or rot away in prison?
